Workshop – Approaching Zeitenwende: How do we initiate Change in People’s Minds? (17 August)
Workshop in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development – Limited Space Available
Germany’s foreign policy is undergoing a dramatic shift. Prompted by escalating geopolitical tensions and the war in Ukraine, Chancellor Scholz made a groundbreaking announcement on February 27, 2022, committing to significant military investments and a more assertive role in international security. This constitutes a profound transformation in the country’s strategic approach.
Yet, following this inflection point in German foreign policy, the transformation is dragging. Both political elites and the public are hesitant to boost investments in the military and acknowledging the current Russian regime as security threat. But why is that? What is preventing German politics from implementing necessary policies? How do we achieve a Zeitenwende in people’s minds?
To address these questions, this workshop will employ a novel deliberation methodology known as „Rapid Think Tank“ (RTT). RTTs offer an approach to rapidly analyze group-based discussions and derive preliminary insights for report writing and documentation. Based on creative problem-solving techniques, we will identify different understandings of why the Zeitenwende is staggering and develop preliminary recommendations to approach the problem.
The workshop is part of a research project on collective deliberation and public understanding of Zeitenwende. For this purpose, you will receive both pre-workshop and post-workshop surveys, which we kindly ask you to complete. There will also be an opportunity to collaborate on a publication.
