26 MAI | History Briefing: NIGER

HISTORY BRIEFING: Niger

From Independence in 1960 to Today

Speaker: Abdourahamane Idrissa Abdoulaye, Leiden University

Following the coup in Mali, Niger with its democratically elected government is increasingly gaining European attention as a partner in the Sahel region. In April 2022 both the German Defence Minister and the German Foreign Minister visited the country. The Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum recently invited European troops still stationed in Mali to be transferred to Niger. In addition, key migration routes from the African continent towards Europe lead through the country.

The WANA, Sahel & Beyond Programme of Polis 180 is hosting a lecture series on Niger to shed light on this pivotal and yet widely unknown country.

In order to better understand present Niger, we have to gain an understanding of dynamics and developments of its modern history.

  • Who were important and influential actors in Niger after its independence?
  • How did the democracy in Niger develop since 1960 and what is its current status?
  • What role did the military play in shaping the independent nation?
  • What factor have the relationships with Niger´s neigbours played?

For this introduction, it is our great honour to welcome Mr. Abdourahamane Idrissa Abdoulaye („Rethinking African History Project“ at the African Studies Centre, Leiden University), an expert on the politics and history of modern Niger, as key speaker for our HISTORY BRIEFING: Niger on 26 May 2021 at 6:30 pm.

No prior knowledge of Niger is necessary. The event will be held in English.

All interested persons are warmly invited. Please share this invitation widely.

If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Erlmann (lisa.erlmann@polis180.org), Co-Head of Programme “WANA, Sahel & Beyond“.
