09 MAY | Making Theatre in Times of War – Online Event on Europe Day

Making Theatre in Times of War – Online Event on Europe Day

Monday, May 9th, 18.30 CET @Zoom

#StandWithUkraine

Russia’s war of aggression on Ukraine has been going on for more than two months now. The war is also having an impact on the way in which cooperation is maintained with Ukrainian cultural workers and cultural institutions. How exactly existing contacts are kept up in these times and in which ways the German and European cultural landscape has to support their Ukrainian colleagues – this is what we would like to talk about on Monday, May 9th, at 18.30 CET with:

  • Laura Busch, dramaturge at the Theater Magdeburg, and Stas Zhyrkow, Intendant of the Left Bank Theater (Kyiv), Director
  • Christy Romer, Communication Manager at the European Theatre Convention
  • Natasha Syvanenko, director at Schauspielhaus Graz

The focus of the evening will be on theatres. May 9th is Europe Day and therefore a special occasion to speak on this topic as the European Union is built not least on a cultural foundation. Culture makes a central contribution to cohesion in Europe.

In the 2016/2017 season, Laura Busch was part of the artistic direction team of the festival „Wilder Osten. Ereignis Ukraine“ and has been in exchange with Ukrainian theater makers not only since then. She will be accompanied by Stas Zhyrkow, multi-award winning director from Kyiv, who was also one of the protagonists of the festival „Wilder Osten. Ereignis Ukraine“.

Christy Romer will present the cultural initiatives of the ETC to express solidarity with the people of Ukraine during the evening.

Due to the Russian invasion in Ukraine, Natasha Syvanenko moved to Austria, where she is an associate theatre maker at Schauspielhaus Graz. She started working in Ukrainian theatres in 2014, where she combined her first directing work with theatre management. During the evening she will talk about her experiences as a theatre maker in times of war.

We are looking forward to our guests and to an exciting exchange.

Please register below for the online event. We will send you the link in the morning of the event day.

Best regards,
Mara Ruth Wesemüller and Daniel Deppe
