Fake news and disinformation campaigns are already influential tools for state and non-state actors to spread their own narratives, manipulate opinion-forming in democratic systems, and destabilize liberal societies.

What approaches are available to democratic systems to defend themselves, become more resilient, and expand their capacities in the future? What role do state actors such as Russia or China play in spreading disinformation campaigns? And how do non-state actors operate? What actual influence can already be measured in our societies, and what can we expect in the future?

Together with the Embassy of Canada, Polis180’s The America(n)s and Digitalization and Cybersecurity programs want to find answers to these questions. We warmly welcome you to join us on November 11, starting at 6:30 p.m. Together with Jennifer Irish*, founding director of the Information Integrity Lab at the University of Ottawa, we will explore the impact of disinformation campaigns on democratic societies and discourse. At the same time, we want to engage in conversation with you. What are your questions, your assessments of the challenges, and possible solutions for reducing the influence of disinformation campaigns on our overall social discourse?

*About the speaker: Jennifer Irish is the founding director of the Information Integrity Lab at the university of Ottawa. She brings more than 35 years of career expertise in the foreign service and federal government with her, including 5 diplomatic postings abroad as well as further leadership experience in international security, global environment issues, human rights, and humanitarian affairs. She also served as Director General at the Integrated Terrorism Assesment Centre and as Director of Operations of the Intelligence Assessment Secretariat of Canada‘ Privy Council Office.

Fake News und Desinformationskampagnen sind bereits heute einflussreiche Werkzeuge für staatliche und nicht-staatliche Akteure, um die eigenen Narrative zu verbreiten, die Meinungsbildung in demokratischen Systemen  zu manipulieren und um liberale Gesellschaften zu destabilisieren.

Welche Ansätze gibt es für demokratische Systeme, sich dagegen zu wehren, resilienter zu werden und ihre Kapazitäten in Zukunft auszubauen? Welche Rolle spielen staatliche Akteure wie Russland oder China bei der Verbreitung von Desinformationskampagnen? Und wie agieren nicht-staatliche Akteure? Welcher tatsächliche Einfluss ist bereits jetzt in unseren Gesellschaften messbar und was kann uns in Zukunft erwarten?

Zusammen mit der kanadischen Botschaft wollen die Programme The America(n)s und Digitalisierung und Cybersicherheit von Polis180 Antworten auf diese Fragen finden. Am 11. November, ab 18:30 Uhr, begrüßen wir euch hierzu herzlich. Gemeinsam mit Jennifer Irish*, Gründungsdirektorin des Information Integrity Lab der University of Ottawa, nähern wir uns dem Einfluss von Desinformationskampagnen auf demokratische Gesellschaften und Diskurse an. Gleichzeitig wollen wir mit euch ins Gespräch kommen. Was sind eure Fragen, eure Einschätzungen zu Herausforderungen und mögliche Lösungsansätze, um die Beeinflussung unseres gesamtgesellschaftlichen Diskurses durch Desinformationskampagnen zu verringern?

*Über die Speakerin: Jennifer Irish ist Gründungsdirektorin des Information Integrity Lab an der Universität Ottawa. Sie verfügt über mehr als 35 Jahre Berufserfahrung im Auswärtigen Dienst Kanadas sowie in weiteren Führungspositionen innerhalb der kanadischen Bundesbehörden, darunter fünf diplomatische Posten im Ausland sowie weitere Führungserfahrung in den Bereichen internationale Sicherheit, globale Umweltfragen, Menschenrechte und humanitäre Angelegenheiten. Außerdem war sie Generaldirektorin des Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre und Direktorin für Operationen des Intelligence Assessment Secretariat des kanadischen Privy Council Office.
