Teatime Report on Mediation in Africa
July 13, 2017

Café Playing With Eels

„Mediation is dead.“ It is this sense of frustration that currently torments many mediators in international politics, according to this teatime’s guest, the renowned mediation expert Pascal da Rocha. Yet, the alternative options are even worse. In two hours, da Rocha made an impassioned case for the strengthening of mediation capacities in international and regional organizations and took the discussion participants on a tour of different African regional organizations, from ECOWAS over IGAD to the African Union. Following his compelling analysis and entertaining anecdotes from the field, the participants had the chance to ask questions on the theory and practice of mediation in international politics.

This event was the first Teatime of a series that is part of the Mediation in Africa project. Over the course of the next months, we will – together with international experts –  discuss and analyse challenges and opportunities of (emerging) structures as well as actors on the African continent, who aim to prevent and transform conflicts with the power of mediation.
