Taiwan at a crossroads: Cross Straits tensions and a future path for a democratic society under siege

Taiwan has had a tumultuous year 2024 so far. The presidential election in January saw the DPP’s Lai Ching-te win an unprecedented third consecutive term in office for the party. The legislature, however, is controlled by the opposition, making any political projects difficult to achieve.

Increasing cross-Straits tensions after the election, geopolitical pressures regarding Taiwan’s semiconductor industry and the results of the US election have raised the stakes for the independently governed island.

What issues is Taiwan facing after the events of 2024? What factors will influence its future path and relationship with the People’s Republic of China? And why are these developments important to us in Germany and Europe?

To discuss these and other questions, we invite you to our Polis Kocht event on 13 November at Berlin Global Village. Join us for an evening of cooking Taiwanese dishes and discussions with our guest, Claudia Wessling, Director of Communications and Publications at the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS).

The event will be co-hosted by Polis180 regional programme connectingAsia and Junge Taiwan Initiative (JTI). The discussion will be held in English. Please register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/taiwan-at-a-crossroads-cross-straits-tensions-and-a-future-path-tickets-1072891881499
